A seasoned performer in the sector

"Franchising is the perfect equilibrium for those who want to enjoy the benefits of big business on a small scale," says Bedshed's Chief Operating Officer Gavin Culmsee.

A seasoned retailer with two decades' experience in franchising, Mr Culmsee says that for many people, the chance to run their own show while capitalising on the benefits of a well-known brand was an appealing option.

"The franchising sector is clearly doing well too. PwC's recent Franchise Sector Indicator cast a shining light on the sector, with franchisees' revenue growing by six per cent in the last 12 months and showing no signs of slowing down," he said.

Mr Culmsee is at the helm of one of Australia's most profitable, thriving and longest-running franchised operations. Bedshed recently notched up its 30th anniversary in franchising and is in the midst of an east coast expansion program.

Chief Operating Officer for the past four years, Mr Culmsee's retail sector experience covers all facets – from business strategy and supply chain management to franchising and leasing.

He has a strong passion for innovation which has seen the business introduce two Australian firsts: an online Franchise Calculator tool enabling would-be franchisees to financially compare different franchised businesses (available at www.bedshed.com.au); and the introduction of new technology in-store to benefit customers and the business.

"Remaining at the forefront of innovation is important to our business. That's why we were the first bricks and mortar retailer in Australia to deliver these web-based capabilities into one of our stores," he said.

"Retailing is an exciting sector because it never stands still. You've got to remain on your toes to keep ahead of the game. It's a great love of mine," he said.
