King is the new Queen

More Australians are buying king size beds than at any other time in history, according to one of Australia’s longest running and most successful franchises.

Gavin Culmsee, Chief Operating Officer at Bedshed, said sales of king size beds had risen 20 per cent in the past five years.

“It’s an interesting industry trend.  People are looking for better quality sleep to keep pace and there’s no doubt king size beds deliver this,” said Mr Culmsee.

“The sheer distance between two sleeping partners means individuals are less likely to be interrupted during the night by partner disturbance. The greater the physical distance between two sleeping people, the better sleep quality,” he said.

“Men and women also sleep at different temperatures, and the impact of an individual’s temperature on another is removed with greater distance between them in the bed,” Mr Culmsee said.

Bedshed executives and a team of more than 10 franchisees have recently returned from an overseas visit to China, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Mr Culmsee said the twice-yearly visits are designed to meet with suppliers, inspect potential new products and look at new bedroom furniture trends.

“What we’re seeing now is a trend towards the white recycled and aged timber look. White has been popular, particularly in a sleek, modern form but now the move is to a more natural, white wash finish on products,” said Mr Culmsee.

Mr Culmsee said the contingent also attended a major trade furniture show in Shanghai.

“It’s just one of the ways we keep our finger on the global pulse of bedding and bedroom furniture trends,” he said.
